There is an ever-growing discussion about the difficulty of people being able to get in to see a GP, any GP, however, there is one area where continuity of care can still hold true, and that is with antenatal care.
A shared care model, between a GP and an obstetrician, allows the mother to be to build a relationship with one GP over the course of her pregnancy. It allows the doctor and patient to get to know one another so that the GP can suss out when things may not be going so well, and the patient to feel that she has a doctor she can trust. That care then ties into the care of the new mother and her new baby. The post-natal reviews are a great time for the GP to follow up on any complications that developed in the pregnancy, check baby out and make sure the new family is doing ok.
The relationship can then evolve into something more long-term, as the GP can help look after the newborn for the inevitable colds and infections, as well as ensure they are developing well, and see to their vaccinations.
Hawkins Medical Clinic has multiple doctors and an endorsed Midwife, who offer shared care, and we are keen to help patients achieve their best outcomes in both pregnancy and after.
