Skin Check Clinics
Special Skin Check clinics operate weekly within Hawkins Clinic. Dr Mike Bruorton and Dr Vishnu Sangangari have interests in dermatology and provide this service on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Patients undergo a full body skin check during the appointment (no make up to be worn) and will need to remove outer clothing, leaving underwear on.
Pigmented lesions of concern will be checked and if necessary scanned. Cryotherapy is offered for sun spots. Treatment of suspicious lesions by subsequent excision appointment or referral to specialists may occur if required.
Service is only available to patients older than 10 years (unless they have had skin checks before). Patients aged 10 to 16 yrs to be accompanied by an adult.
Paediatric Walk in Clinics
The Hawkins Clinic provides a Monday to Friday walk in clinic for any Hawkins patient under the age
of five with a recent illness (ie fever, rash, cough, sore throat, earache etc).
Simply attend the clinic between 11.00 am and 11.30 am Monday to Friday and your child will be seen - no need to phone to make an appointment. Normal clinic fees apply for the first visit but returns for reassessment for the same illness within 7 days will be bulk billed.
The aim is to provide a simple way to get help and any necessary followup for young children without the need to negotiate the standard appointment system.
Childhood Immunisation Clinics
Childhood immunisation clinics are held each week to assist parents meet the required timeframe for their child’s immunisation needs.
Patients can attend the immunisation clinic if appointments with their normal doctor are difficult to get at the appropriate time. These clinics occur on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons and are bulk billed. Parents are encouraged to complete the billing beforehand allowing them to look after their child following the immunisation.
Antenatal Clinics
Hawkins Clinic runs an antenatal clinic from our branch location in Ferrers Street.
Our experienced midwives consult each Friday sharing antenatal care with our doctors during the pregnancy.
Patients referred to our midwives service typically alternate visits with the GP and the midwife who will perform the same checks as your doctor and will consult promptly with your doctor in case of concerns.
The midwives provide a great insight into the journey you will undertake through to the birth of your child in hospital.
The costs to you to see the midwife are the same as it would have been to see your doctor.
INR Clinics
The Hawkins Clinic has a point of care machine capable of performing INR testing within the clinic with an instant result. Your doctor may refer you to one of these INR clinics when your Warfarin medication is stable.
These clinics avoid patients having to contact their doctor when the pathology test results return to get new instructions on the medication levels required to continue. This is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and reduces confusion if medication intake needs to change.
Chronic Disease Management
A number of Hawkins Clinic nurses have undergone training to assist patients learn how to better manage their condition with diseases like Diabetes, Heart disease and Asthma.
Eligible patients are offered an appointment with one of these nurses who will explain the disease and prepare a draft management plan for the patient’s doctor.
These nurse appointments are offered at our branch clinic at 29 Ferrers Street Mount Gambier.
Patients then have an appointment with their doctor who completes the management plan and any referrals that may be considered beneficial. Patients are given a copy of the management plan document which they are encouraged to share with other health professionals involved in their care.
Eligible patients may also be entitled to access up to 5 Medicare rebates for allied health consults (Once a Medicare Team Care Arrangement item number has been billed).
Patients are encouraged to review their management plan with their doctor at six month intervals. Some patients are referred back to our nurses prior to their doctor appointment to assist them to achieve the goals that were identified and agreed upon in the original management plan.
